History

The Tri island of Mombasa is located about 441 Km South East of Nairobi.

Visiting the main island of Mombasa is like sampling the culture and history of three continents over the course of a millennium. The influence of Arabs, Portuguese, African and native Mijikenda culture and history is everywhere. Although the official language is English, most people speak Swahili or English dialect that contains a colorful mixture of words from each period of the island's history, be it Portuguese, Arabic or Mijikenda.

The customs have evolved as much from its coastal environment as from the mixture of cultures that settled here. The strong traditions of dance and drum are gifts from Africa.
